Sediment is scientifically defined as a deposition of various materials, generated from the tectonic processes and movements of the earth’s crust. Ingredients of mineral water are varied by areas, depending on its surrounding topography and environment. In Tien Giang Province, Miocene sediment is discovered at a nearly 500 m depth, covered by a thick clay layer outside. Therefore, the local natural mineral water is characterized by colorless, odorless and multi-trace minerals. This Miocene layer is found with premium water quality and a stable amount of minerals; water’s chemical properties are mainly sodium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate chloride.

Various types of mineral water are abundantly available in the world. Many of which are originated from the area of volcanic bedrock, snow and melted ice, while in Vietnam, mineral water is derived from Miocene sediment. Although mineral water is abundant like that, not all mineral water is drinkable and healthy.

For assessment whether a mineral water is safe, rigorous test from the State competent and reputable authorities is required. Additionally, one of the criteria for water quality assessment is content of Ca2 + and Mg2 + ions, showing whether water is hard or soft. If total content is high (up to 20.04 mg of Ca2+ or 12.16 mg of Mg2+ in 1ml water), the water shall be recognized as hard water or vice versa. The water must be qualified with standardized soft water so as not to adversely affect users’ health but still remain its natural cool taste.

The combination of stable bicarbonate content and relatively low content of Ca2+ and Mg2+ gives Miocen natural mineral water a cool taste and ensures no impact on consumers’ health.
